CHAPEL HILL, NC — President Barack Obama arrived in the Triangle Tuesday for the fifth time in the last 10 months, where he will make a stop at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill to promote his plan to keep student interest rates on a popular federal loan program from going up.

Senator Hagan, along with Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), announced new legislation today to ensure that taxpayers’ investment in federal assistance for college students is not being wasted on advertising, marketing and recruitment rather than being used to educate and support students. The Protecting Financial Aid for Students and Taxpayers Act will maximize federal student aid by prohibiting the use of Pell Grants, federal student loans, the Post-9/11 GI Bill, and other federal education funds for such practices, similar to a current law that bans the use of federal higher education dollars for lobbying.

If you plan on using, or have used, you AmeriCorps award towards a loan you should definitely read this. First to make sure we are clear on some basic facts: 1. AmeriCorps forbears and covers all interest accrued during service for qualifying loans. 2. This only happens once a year: at the end of each term (July-Sept) 3. To have your interest covered you must submit a request form within the above mentioned time period 4. Every student loan has two parts. Part one is the principle, this is the actual loan. Part two, the interest, this part grows as long as you don’t pay it off. For some loans, if the interest gets high enough it can even be added to your principle. (THAT IS BAD) When to use your AmeriCorps award Since you want your AmeriCorps award to go straight to your loans’ principle (the actual loan amount, ie, everything that is not interest), it is important to use your AmeriCorps award at the right time. Every time you make a loan payment, your money is first used to pay off all accrued interest and then to your principle. Therefore, the best time to use your AmeriCorps award is right after AmeriCorps has paid off your interest in July-Sept. If you make a payment in January, your award will first be used to pay off your interest and then your principle. This is a bad because you are throwing away the money you pay towards interest.
